SHREVEPORT, La. ( KTAL/KMSS ) – State Treasurer John Fleming discusses his stance on Bank of America.

Treasurer Fleming said he is a voting member on the Interim Emergency Board that approves banks becoming fiscal agents for the state. Bank of America applied to be a state fiscal agent, but Fleming recommended to the board that the bank be denied. The board agreed and denied Bank of America’s request.

Fleming said the institution denied services to groups and individuals based on their political and religious affiliation, including those working for churches, oil and gas companies, farms, and manufacturers.

“Bank of America unfortunately has a very sad history of discrimination against Christians. They denied services, what we call debanking ; that’s the key term in all this. They de-banked two Christian organizations that provide charity work in Africa. That makes no sense at all. I could understand if they were bouncing checks or something. But these are good customers. But just because the bank does not agree with their political views or occupation, they’re actually cutting them off from banking services,” Fleming said.

Fleming said he believes Bank of America is a good bank in every other way, especially as one of the country’s largest institutions. He does not support “weaponizing financial systems because of politics.”

We contacted Bank of America for comment but have not heard back as this story is airing.
