SHREVEPORT, La. ( KTAL/KMSS ) —The Louisiana Governor’s Conference on Juvenile Justice held its 43rd annual gathering at Sam’s Town Hotel and Casino in Shreveport. The conference provides training for professionals and nonprofits that work with youth in the system.

Event board chair Vieve Kohrs said, “We are pleased to announce that this is one the largest conferences we’ve had in many years.”

Attendees discussed emerging challenges, interventions, and solutions to better serve youth, new trends, and issues impacting juvenile justice’s core work.

The age of juvenile offenders continues to get younger, and conferences aim is early intervention with youths and their families. Two things that kept coming were a lack of discipline and parental involvement.

Dr. Letitia Scott Jackson, with the nonprofit Keeping Families Together, said, “It’s just a lack of connection and the lack of discipline because a lot of parents now are just letting the internet and the games raise their children, and so we need to get back to the basics and to parenting. “

The conference ends on Friday, August 23rd at Noon.
