NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — Archbishop Shaw will be naming its annual jamboree the “Ed Daniels Classic” in honor of WGNO Sports Director Ed Daniels who passed away Friday, August 16th.

“I was thinking maybe the first game because we’re playing Karr. You know, like a lot of people are going to be there and I was saying, I don’t know if we want to, because it’s Karr. Then we started kicking around here and some of the guys in the booster club said listen, the Jamboree is going to be at Shaw every year. Let’s name it, from now on, the Ed Daniels Classic,” said Archbishop Shaw head coach Hank Tierney.

The Ed Daniels Classic will feature matchups between Brother Martin and John Ehret and St. Aug and Shaw starting next Friday at Joe Zimmerman Stadium.

The first game kicks off at 5:30 p.m.

“It’s going to be a night in honor of Ed. You know, we’re going to do a lot of promoting and we’re going to give a lot of things away and just try in some small way to honor a legend, an icon of prep sports,” added Tierney.

Ed Daniels is a founding father of WGNO’s Friday Night Football, presented by the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Season 33 begins tonight with a special 30-minute tribute to Ed Daniels and his impact on prep football in the New Orleans metro area.

The show starts at 11 p.m. on Nola 38 the CW. The replay follows at midnight on WGNO.
