NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — On Sunday, the New Orleans Saints will play their first home game of the season, and to get fans excited, the annual Saints Kickoff Run 5K will take place on Saturday. The best part is, you get to run on the field inside Caesars Superdome.

“The race starts in Champions Square, it is three miles into the French Quarter, and then it is like a dream come true. Runners will finish in the air conditioning on the 50-yard line on the Fleur de Lis inside the Superdome,” Jamie Monroe, the director of the Saints Kickoff Run 5K race said.

This is the 12th year for the Saints Kickoff Run, and so far, this year’s shaping up to be one of the largest ever, with 6,000 runners already registered.

“Fans don’t always get to come out on the field, but the Saints organization and Mrs. Gayle Benson have been great to let us come in and let fans feel what it’s like to be a player,” Monroe said.

Saints fans can live out their Alvin Kamara or Taysom Hill fantasies.

“When you sit in the stands, or watch the games on TV, you just don’t get the same experience as running on the field. Runners will be talking about the time I finished on the 50-yard line,” he said.

Monroe said the Saints kickoff run is the perfect way to get the season started.

“Part of my passion being race director is everyone gets to be an athlete,” he said.

    And it pays to play.

“Money raised from the event goes to the charity, Louisiana National Guard Foundation. This will be the second year they are the charitable partner. Every year this race raises thousands for local charities. The Louisiana National Guard Foundation is great at supporting National Guard members and their families,” Monroe said.

Every participant will be given a commemorative medal and a T-shirt, plus, there will be a party in Champions Square after the race.

The Saints Kickoff Run 5K begins at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7 in Champions Square. There will also be a half-mile run for kids following the 5K. Race packets will be available for pickup on Thursday and Friday.

Registration for the Saints Kickoff Run 5K is still taking place.
