According to a news release, XULA will join the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Storage Research Alliance as one of 12 universities to “expedite technology commercialization for cutting-edge energy storage solutions.”

XULA leaders said Bellsouth Endowed Professor of Chemistry and Material Science Lamartine Meda will serve as the principal investigator for Xavier in the collaboration.

Meda said the research will focus on interfacial reactions to improve how solid-state batteries perform.

The release states the ESRA “seeks to enable transformative discoveries in materials chemistry, gain a fundamental understanding of electrochemical phenomena at the atomic scale, lay the scientific foundations for breakthroughs in energy storage technologies, and train the next generation battery workforce to ensure U.S. scientific and economic leadership.”

The organization’s research will go toward producing high-energy batteries that won’t catch fire, store longer and last longer.

The DOE will also fund the ESRA up to $62.5 million over the next five years.
