JEFFERSON PARISH, La. ( WGNO ) — A mandatory evacuation has been issued for residents in Laffite and Grand Isle in anticipation of Tropical Storm Francine making landfall.

During a press conference on Monday, Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng ordered a mandatory evacuation for those outside of the levee protection system due to the risk of a “potentially life-threatening” storm surge.

Mandatory evacuation issued for Zone 1 of Terrebonne Parish

Sheng specifically mentioned Grand Isle and Laffite to be under the evacuation order.

Earlier on Monday, the mayor of Grand Isle, David Camardelle, called for a voluntary evacuation for Grand Isle residents, and a mandatory evacuation for those in campers, RVs and cargo and boat trailers.

During the press conference, Sheng commented that, for those seeking more sturdy shelter who may be living in mobile homes, the Terrytown Playground, located at 641 Heritage Ave., in Terrytown, will open and available at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
