Why isn’t LSU Football running the ball more? Kelly talks game strategy ahead of South Carolina

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — LSU head coach Brian Kelly addressed the reason why LSU Football is NOT running the ball more often, even against an outmatched Nicholls team last Saturday.

The Tigers only ran for 68 yards against their FCS opponent for just 3.2 yards per attempt.

Brian Kelly’s response on Monday: “We threw the football (more) because that’s what was required in the game.”

According to Kelly, the LSU offense faced more defenders closer to the line of scrimmage, so LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was asked to audible out of running plays in favor of a pass instead.

“We’re not going to run into extra (defenders) just to flex and say we’re the bigger guys,” Kelly explained. “We’re going to do, tactically and technically, what is the most appropriate thing.”
