NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — In Friday’s 38-34 win over Pearl River, St. Martin’s running back Harlem Berry proved why he is one of the top players in the country.
The LSU commit totaled 169 yards rushing and two touchdowns with 109 yards receiving and another score.
Defensively, he finished with 5 tackles and 2 forced fumbles. The second set up the Saints’ game-winning touchdown drive and he ended the night with a pass deflection.
“Honestly, playing offense kind of compliments to playing defense, and playing defense compliments to playing offense. Reading where the guard is pulling and where the ball might go made it easier for me to get to the spot and make a tackle, force a couple of fumbles, and make that pass break up at the end of the game. I just think it was fun. We plan for that type of stuff and it was just easy to execute,” said St. Martin’s running back Harlem Berry.
Berry’s commitment to his team and ability to impact the game on both sides of the ball shows head coach Kevin Dizer and the rest of the state how important winning is to the LSU commit.
“You know, Harlem was battling cramps and just getting beat up in general, and I didn’t know how many defensive snaps we could get out of him. He just kept wanting to go back and kept wanting to go back. And he ended up making a few big plays down the stretch for us, on defense and offense, to help us put that win over the top. That just shows you how much of a winner he is and how great his character is. LSU is lucky to have him coming in for sure,” said St. Martin’s head coach Kevin Dizer.
St. Martin’s passed their week one test with a statement victory, showing the Saints are ready to contend in Division IV Select with a healthy club and Harlem Berry leading the charge.
“We could push through anything. You know, we were down the whole game and honestly, we just kept working. We didn’t look at the score, but we kept fighting and we competed. This team is just a competing team. We’re out there to go do the best we can, work the hardest, and go out there and ball out,” said Berry.
