BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — The Birmingham Police Department held. a press conference Sunday morning after four people were killed, and 17 others were injured in a mass shooting in Five Points South on Saturday night . The news conference will be archived and uploaded shortly.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald with the BPD stated the preliminary investigation shows that “multiple” suspects fired on a large group of people who were in an outside public area in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue South. Police were dispatched to the area just after 11 p.m. on report of shots fired.

Two men and one woman were pronounced dead at the scene on the sidewalk who had been suffering from gunshot wounds. Another man was pronounced dead at UAB Hospital.

The 17 other wounded victims, which includes men and women, sustained injuries varying from not life-threatening to life-threatening. BPD detectives think the shooting was not random and believe victims were caught in the crossfire. Detectives are trying to figure out who the intended targets were. There are no suspects in custody.

“We believe the individual that was targeted was among the deceased,” Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond said. “We believe that there was a hit, if you will, on that particular person as far as someone was willing to pay money to have that person killed.”

Thurmond said over 100 shell cases were collected at the scene. He said police believe there was a fully automatic weapon used in the shooting. Thurmond said the shooters were in a vehicle, departed the vehicle, the shooting occurred, and the shooters fled the scene.

The ATF and FBI are helping the BPD in the investigation. Those with information on the case are urged to call the BPD at 205-254-1764 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777. Crime Stoppers could award tipsters up to $5,000.

If lawmakers won't tighten the gun accessibility and consequence laws, then they need to rule that all young men...18 and up... not going to college or have real, stable jobs, be ordered to enlist...train...and go to war. If these little thugs with no respect for their lives or anyone else's want to spend their days and nights shooting and committing crimes, then they should be put on the front lines in Gaza, etc.
