KENNER, La. ( WGNO ) — The Kenner Police Department reports that they have successfully seized a fraudulent website demanding money from residents.

According to KPD officers, the website, which is reportedly being operated from a Russian server, has been mimicking the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development’s toll payment website.

Residents have reported receiving text messages claiming they had an unpaid toll fee of $3.75 and that if unpaid, then they would face a $30 fee to be paid to an allegedly false GeauxPass website.

A joint investigation with the Department of Homeland Security and the National Intellectual Property Rights Center led to the seizure of the site through a warrant issued by the 24th Judicial District Court.

The KPD along with DOTD officials are warning residents of the “smishing” scam and are advising anyone who may have fallen victim to the scam, to report any suspicious activity.

“Please be alert to smishing scams- these crooks weren’t after $3.75, they want your credit card information!” said Chief Keith Conley.
