ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH, La. ( WGNO ) — The New Orleans District of the United States Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a contract for levee construction and pipeline work along the floodwall of Lake Pontchartrain.

The work is a part of the West Shore Lake Pontchartrain (WSLP) Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction project.

On Sept. 25, WSLP-109 awarded the $23.3 million contract to Cycle Construction Company, LLC, of Kenner, for the construction of about one mile of the 18.5-mile-long levee system.

“In awarding the last contract of the 2024 fiscal year for the West Shore Lake Pontchartrain Hurricane and Storm Reduction Project we are excited to continue pushing forward on delivering a 1-percent level of storm surge risk reduction to the people that live and work in the three-parish area in southeast Louisiana,” said Col. Cullen Jones, New Orleans District Commander.

Jones says the work will take place in St. John the Baptist and St. Charles parishes and will elevate the levee 8.6 feet.

USACE officials say the work will provide a 100-year risk reduction to the area primarily in St. John the Baptist, St. James and St. Charles parishes.

The organization anticipates the project to achieve 100-year storm surge risk reduction through structural and non-structural features including levees, floodwalls and pumps.

Officials warn that the structures will reduce the risks associated with tropical events, but do not foresee a reduced risk of flooding from significant rainfall.
