NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — Officials with the City of New Orleans have announced that a new rideshare pilot program for Frenchmen Street is launching on Thursday, Sept. 26.

City leaders said the Mayor’s Office of Nighttime Economy is partnering with rideshare companies Uber and Lyft to create designated drop-off and pick-up spots in the area to help reduce traffic on the popular New Orleans street.

City officials said the spots will be similar to ones seen at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, Saints games and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

According to the Office of Nighttime Economy, Uber and Lyft make up about 80% of peak weekend traffic.

The designated zones will be located about one block away from Frenchmen Street at 700 Elysian Fields Ave. and 500 Elysian Fields Ave. Those using Uber and Lyft to get to or from Frenchmen Street will be directed to those areas.

The pilot program will run from Sept. 26 through Nov. 24 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

City officials said during those times, rideshare drop-off and pick-up traffic will not be allowed to enter Frenchmen Street.

Signs will reportedly be changed in the areas of the zones during the nighttime that state “Passenger Zone: No Parking.”
