FLORIDA ( KLFY ) — Ahead of Hurricane Helene’s eventual landfall, United Cajun Navy is preparing teams across Florida and Alabama to take action when needed.

A team is also in Washington D.C. with FEMA and Red Cross to coordinate relief efforts for the damage Hurricane Helene is expected to bring. With Florida being the state prone to hurricanes, communities respond to the news of a storm and work together with preparation and relief efforts from organizations, such as United Cajun Navy.

Kevin LaFond, United Cajun Navy search and rescue coordinator, said the various teams play a crucial in getting relief good distributed out to the communities.

“We bring it in, stage it, have it all there. But we rely on local community to really help us get these things out to people that are in need,” LaFond said.

LaFond said Hurricane Helene could bring “historic” flood waters.

“This is going to be a historic event as far as flood waters go,” he said.

“It’s going to move very quickly. I’ll move inland just past midnight tonight. Those floodwaters are where the real danger is. If you’ve been ordered to evacuate, please do so. Evacuate immediately if you’ve been told to evacuate. We’re talking 10 to 12 feet above normal sea levels,” he said.
