MONROE, La. ( KTVE/KARD ) — High school and college homecoming is in full swing, and while students and alumni will be celebrating, it always calls for precaution to be taken.

Illegal substances should not be taken. If you are under the age of 21, do not drink alcohol or participate in illegal or impairing substances.

You should also not drink and drive. Ensure that you have a sober ride before participating in any homecoming festivities.

Always be aware of your surroundings and secure any valuable items in the trunk of your car. Pay attention to street names, parking signs and landmarks.

If you are a student celebrating, always have a plan.

Never leave an event by yourself and let your friends know who you are with and where you will be going. You should also communicate with your parents or guardians, establish a curfew, and balancing safety and fun.

If at any point while you are away, you notice that you are being followed. Cross the street, change directions, or go to a place with a crowd of people and call 911 immediately.

Finally, parents, you should always be available for your teenager, especially if they find themselves in an unsafe situation.
