TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — First responders across Tampa Bay began rescue efforts following Hurricane Helene’s landfall overnight.

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor said crews have been busy responding to emergency calls, mainly focused on Davis Island, receiving nearly 200 calls since 2 a.m.

There have been 87 rescues as of 6 a.m., including 47 individuals and eight dogs by boat. Four Jon Boats are currently out to rescue residents. High tide is expected at 11:01 a.m., with low tide expected after 7 p.m., so residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any individual who may be in need of help.

Mayor Castor said that 74,000 locations are still without power and roughly 80 power lines are down. If residents have electricity, the mayor urged them to “pay attention.”

“Don’t go outside to explore,” she added.
