BOGALUSA, La. ( WGNO ) — A Bogalusa man has been found guilty of the attempted manslaughter of his former girlfriend following the deliberation of a jury on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
According to information from the 22nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office, shortly before midnight on June 24, 2022, officers with the Bogalusa Police Department were made aware of a stabbing in the 600 block of Sabine Street.
On scene, officers found a 40-year-old woman with “massive amounts of blood” on her face, torso and legs.
While the victim was being treated by the Bogalusa Fire department and Northshore EMS, officers identified her attacker as her former boyfriend, 65-year-old Andrew Weary.
The victim was taken to a local hospital and then later moved to a second hospital to be treated for stab wounds to her face, neck, chest, abdomen and forearm.
At trial, the victim stated that she had dated Weary briefly and tried to end the relationship multiple times. Each time, however, Weary reportedly threatened to harm her.
The victim further stated that, on the night of the stabbing, Weary showed up at her friend’s home where she was staying. To avoid causing a scene, the victim reportedly agreed to speak with Weary at a nearby shed. In the shed, Weary pulled a large knife and began stabbing the victim. Weary then fled as the victim screamed.
A nearby man testified that, from inside his residence on the night of the incident, he heard the victim arguing with an older man. The resident then exited his home and asked the victim if she needed help, which she declined. A few minutes later, the resident reportedly heard banging on his door. When he opened it, he saw the victim, covered in blood and without the man she had been arguing with.
Weary’s sentencing is set for Nov. 7. Attempted manslaughter typically carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, however, due to his criminal history, he could receive a life sentence.
Weary has prior convictions for offenses such as attempted first degree murder, armed robbery, aggravated battery, forgery and unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling. He had been released on parole for three months prior to this incident, after having served around 21 years of the 75 year sentence he received in 2001 for his attempted first degree murder case.
