NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — A new development emerged in the NOPD’s federal consent decree on Friday, Sept. 27.

The City of New Orleans and the Department of Justice are reportedly asking a federal judge to end it.

If approved by the judge, a 2-year “sustainment period” will begin once all of the police department’s problems have been addressed.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said in a statement “I hope this is a meaningful path to reduce the scope of oversight and to create objectively measurable metrics focused on returning power and oversight to the people, not the federal courts.”
