Tangipahoa Parish deputies warn residents of jury duty scam

TANGIPAHOA PARISH, La. ( WGNO ) — Deputies with the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office are warning residents about a jury duty phone scam.

The TPSO reported that the scam involves callers spoofing the sheriff’s office phone number and using the names of real employees to threaten residents with arrest for missing jury duty if they don’t pay thousands of dollars over the phone.

TPSO officials said that while the names of employees may be real, the badge numbers provided by the scam callers are fake.

According to the sheriff’s office, the TPSO is not responsible for sending jury summons or making calls about jury duty.

They also do not collect any fines or ask for personal information over the phone.

Additionally, deputies are reminding residents not to open email attachments from sources they do not know.
