SAN DIEGO ( Border Report ) — The incoming mayoral administration in Tijuana says it will streamline access to the medical lane at the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

The lane allows people who have medical or dental issues to quickly cross the border into the U.S. provided they have a pass from a licensed provider.

Medical and dental facilities buy the passes from the city and then issue them to their patients.

But a recent audit revealed widespread abuse and corruption within the program.

Tijuana’s secretary of economic development, Pedro Montejo Peterson, said they are revising the program to cut down on misuse of the passes.

He said they uncovered many bogus medical clinics that didn’t exist that were buying passes and then selling them to average people for a profit.

“The political will is there to make changes, in two to three weeks this will all be resolved, we will operate transparently,” said Montejo Peterson.

He also emphasized legitimate clinics, medial and dental providers will continue to have access to these passes.
