SHREVEPORT, La. ( KTAL/KMSS ) — For the fourth year, dogs and their handlers from across the country will compete in the Super Retriever Series (SRS)to win the championship in dock diving , and retrieve hidden ducks for the chance to win $75,000.

The SRS Crown Championship combines Retriever Trials and the Super Dock events for those who qualified throughout the year from all SRS qualifying events.

The event is free and open to the public. Spectators and their dogs can participate in “fun jumps,” watch sporting and amateur dogs launch into the water, and hunt for duck toys hidden within the fielded obstacles.

The “Fun Jumps” are free, but all participants must sign a waiver.

“If your dog likes water and retrieving, it is for all breeds. Then they’ll do fine.”

Dock Diving is when a dog jumps off a 40-foot-long dock to catch their favorite toy, which is thrown by the owner or handler.

For eight days, beginning with the Super Retriever Series (SRS) Dock diving competition on October 25 – 27, 2024, and the Retriever Trials on October 29 – November 2nd.

The first, second, and third-place SRS Crown Champions are recognized and will be invited back the following year to defend their championship titles. The winner will receive the prestigious name of SRS Crown Champion within the Retriever Trials Open and Amateur divisions and all Super Dock divisions.

The event is held on the boardwalk behind the Bass Pro Shops (100 Bass Pro Dr, Bossier City, LA 71111).

Nardi said that 25 years ago, SRS started as ESPN’s “Great Outdoor Games.” She was involved in production and noticed the growing interest in dog sports. When the show’s format changed, she was determined to continue.

SRS originated as a qualifier and has since transformed into a national championship, with 30 qualifiers from across the country throughout the year. The top three amateurs and the top three professional trainers of their event then qualify for the SRS Crown Championship, which takes place in Shreveport.

“I just get amazed in the Retriever side. I get amazed by watching a dog communicate with the handler and then be able to take commands and just do his job and be able to watch how smart and remarkable they are. I think what pulled me in the beginning and still does,” said Nardi.

For the Super Dock events, Super Fly Divisions, Tyke and Silver, Super V, and Raider Run, competitors are categorized by experience, from amateur and professional to Marvel.

“Louisiana is the sportsman’s paradise. So for all of these dogs, you know, especially on the retriever side, it’s in their neck of the woods for duck hunting and that kind of thing.”

Nardi estimates there are 75 dock divers and 105 retrievers registered to compete.

The event is live-streamed and outdoors. She suggests bringing a lawn chair, plenty of water, and not wearing white as “the dog will look back at people in white sometimes and, you know, just plan on enjoying a day outside.”
