MARRERO, La. — In week four, Shaw senior running back Jasper Parker broke the Eagles’ single-game rushing record with 35 carries for 327 yards and two touchdowns in a dominant 31-8 win over Lafayette Christian.

“I didn’t know I broke the record till after the game because I didn’t know I was over 300. The game was going so fast. It was so much fun. I was talking to the offensive line the whole time, hyping them up. So I really didn’t figure out I broke the record until after. Somebody walked up to me to interview me, they were writing down and they were like, ‘I got you for 326.’ I was like 326? I’d even know I touched 300, but it just felt good,” said Shaw senior running back Jasper Parker.

“It was incredible. I’m not shocked, though,” said Shaw head football coach Hank Tierney.

“We probably give it to him about 14-15 times a game and situations dictated that we had to run the ball and run the clock. We were having trouble containing their quarterback who was a great player. So we just kept giving it to him and I kept checking with him between series and he was fine. We were able to run the ball, run the clock. And if you give it to him that many times, he’s going to get that many yards because he’s had yards against everybody we’ve played. Even Karr and Rummel and teams like that. You know, he always answers the bell,” added Tierney.

The record was previously held by Steffon Gray, one of several extraordinary football talents to hail from the Shaw football program. Jasper Parker is now one of them after his record-setting night.

“I was just actually on a podcast yesterday and they were talking about the greats that came before me and it was just an honor to be able to wear the jerseys that those guys had worn before me and come out and perform the way I did. You got guys like Shyrone Carey, who’s in a record twice. You got Brandon Carey, who’s in that record book. Just those guys that played under Coach Hank, those guys that just came through the hallways and to be able to come out and break a record that holds so much prestige as a running backs record, it felt good to me,” said Parker.
