Local organizations looking for help in assisting hurricane victims

NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — Recovery efforts are now on in Florida following Hurricane Milton.

Thousands are left with home damage and millions more without power. This comes just a couple of weeks after Hurricane Helene made its way through the southeast from Florida to North Carolina, causing severe destruction in its path.

Now, several organizations across Louisiana are looking for all the help they can get in their efforts to assist these victims.

“With Ida, with Katrina; the Carolinas and Florida and Georgia all stepped in to really support our community, so now we have an opportunity to pay it forward,” Blood Center Public Relations Manager Paul Adams said.

The blood center is looking for new people to come donate and for them to come often so they are able to help supply not only our local hospitals, but hospitals in North Carolina and Florida affected by the two hurricanes.

“These storms are going to be affecting these communities through the next several weeks to months, and so we need these donors to come out for that time period for probably till the end of the year,” Adams said.

Organizations like second harvest food bank are looking for items such as cleaning supplies, water, non-perishable foods and canned goods with pop-tops.

“You know canned pears, canned peaches, beef stews that people can eat with just a plastic spoon, or energy slash granola bars, or nutrition bars that people can eat,” Second Harvest Food Bank Chief Strategy Officer John Sillars said.

If you are unable to donate blood or items like this, you can donate time. Places like red cross say they are always looking for volunteers to help, especially right now.

“The things that we can do in Louisiana if you are willing to put the red vest on to go out to help your neighbor, just go to redcross.org or 1-800-red-cross. We always need volunteers to provide the service that is needed,” Louisiana Region Red Cross CEO Kenneth St. Charles said.
