JEFFERSON PARISH, La. ( WGNO ) — Students from various Jefferson Parish high schools got to learn about jobs on the Mississippi River at an event at the Port of New Orleans on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

More than 200 students met with potential employers to learn about different career opportunities and participate in hands-on activities like line throwing.

“You would think that living in New Orleans, everybody knows about jobs on the river. That’s not the case, and what we want to ensure is that not just seniors that are knocking on the door of career opportunities, but all the way down into the eighth-grade levels, that everybody knows what we do and why it impacts the country, and what kind of opportunities they have to start right here in New Orleans,” said General Manager of Quality and Learning at Canal Barge Company Sidney Blakemore.

Representatives from the Port of New Orleans, We Work the Waterways, Associated Terminals and St. Bernard Port attended the event.
