NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — The weather is shifting which means the holiday season is upon us. With that comes travel and the Transportation Security Administration at the Louis Armstrong airport is preparing for the influx of passengers.

To enhance security, TSA officials said they are installing 11 new automated screening lanes with computed Tomography scanners at the airport checkpoint.

This will decrease the amount of time travelers spend in the security screening process.

Installation of the lanes began months ago, according to TSA officials and is ongoing.

“Once complete, the new equipment will allow for two extra lanes during the busy Super Bowl departures period, bringing the total from 15 to 17 lanes,” said MSY officials.

The scanners will provide a clear 3-D image of what is in a passenger’s bag and body cavity.

“The ASLs include several new features such as multiple passengers can place their carry-ons into bins at the same time and empty bins speed their own way back automatically to the next set of passengers,” said MSY officials.

They add that the new equipment will also help with the uptick in travel volume for events such as Super Bowl LIX set to happen at the Caesars Superdome in 2025.
