TANGIPAHOA PARISH, La. ( WGNO ) — A man is dead following a secondary-crash that occurred in Tangipahoa Parish in the evening hours of Friday, Oct. 18.

According to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, troopers with Troop L began investigating the crash, which occurred on US Highway 51 at Kohnke Hill Road near Hammond, around 8:10 p.m.

The initial investigation shows that two separate crashes happened minutes apart from each other in the same general location. The first crash involved a 2025 Nissan Altima driven by 81-year-old Charles Baglio Jr., of Independence, who was traveling eastbound on Kohnke Hill Road toward US Highway 51.

At the same time, a 2016 Nissan Altima was reportedly driving south on the highway and hit the Nissan driven by Baglio, as officials say, it entered the intersection in front of the 2016 Nissan. The 2025 Nissan then came to a stop between both lanes of US Highway 51, and the 2016 Nissan came to a stop in the northbound ditch.

Before emergency services arrived, Baglio reportedly left his car to check on the driver of the 2016 Nissan. Afterward, troopers say Baglio was crossing the highway to go back to his car when he was hit by a 2001 Toyota Tundra that was driving south.

Baglio was fatally injured and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Toyota was unrestrained but uninjured, and is not suspected to have been impaired. A routine toxicology sample was taken from Baglio as part of the continuing investigation.
