NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — Dogs and their owners lined up as local nonprofit, The Inner Pup, distributed healthy dog food to ensure their dog bowls were never empty.

“People want to be the best owners they can be to their pets, so it’s really exciting to give them the tools to be that good owner. It’s so exciting to be able to provide this service. I feel like it’s one that people really need,” said The Inner Pup Executive Assistant Blue Taylor.

A ‘Second line to the polls’ event kicked off early voting

The Inner Pup Co-founder Gene Goldring explains that, due to Hurricane Francine, they reached out to organizations about disaster relief for pets. She says the local nonprofit doesn’t want anyone to worry about feeding their pets during difficult times.

“Pet food is very expensive. And we have so many pet owners here who adore their pets and are often forced to buy some optimal quality nutrition for their pets. And so this offer is just sensational for us,” said Goldring.

Many picking up pet food say these distributions help in so many ways.

“I’m feeling real, real appreciated and blessed. Yes, because I have two big dogs. And to get, and believe me, it’s hard to get, buy them food and stuff like that. But that’s why I’m blessed,” said pet owner Cynthia Estrello.

“I got two big boys and it’s not easy, because their food is just as high as ours. But I’m thankful that y’all have this program, and never stop,” said pet owner Dee.

Organizers want pet owners to know that, if they have pets and need help, their organization is always there.

“We are here to fill the gap for people who are struggling to keep their pets, that we are for owners in our community who don’t have the means to provide the care that they want to provide, that it can reach out to us to keep them from having to give up their pets,” said Taylor.

“We do monthly heartworm and flea prevention clinics because heartworm disease is a viral disease and less it is, there is a monthly prevention given,” said Goldring.
