Firefighters battling 4,000-acre wildfire at Wharton State Forest

NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Firefighters in South Jersey are still working to control a wildfire that broke out in Wharton State Forest late Friday morning.

The New Jersey Fire Service says the fire spans 4,000 acres and, as of 5 p.m. Saturday, is 65% contained.

Two helicopters have been deployed — one for observation and the other for dropping 300 gallons of water on the fire.

The fire service has evacuated the nearby Batona Campground and the Batona Trail between Route 532 and Carranza Road is closed.

The Tulpehocken Trail is also closed between Apple Pie Hill and Hawkins Bridge.

And Carranza Road is closed from the Carranza Memorial to Speedwell Road.

Officials urge people to avoid the area until things are under control.
