Church Redevelopment to Bring Affordable Housing to Downtown

A church in downtown Atlanta could take on new life in the next few years.

Trinity United Methodist Church is expected to be converted into housing for seniors. The project would create 54 residential units, with almost all of them for residents earning between 30 and 80 percent Area Median Income (AMI), ranging from $495 to $1,753. Urbanize Atlanta first reported the news.

The team behind the project is Gorman & Company . Founded in 1984, the Wisconsin-based real estate development company specializes in downtown revitalization and affordable housing. Gorman & Company’s first project in Georgia is Residences at Westview , a 60-unit apartment community in west Atlanta.

The city recently announced that Invest Atlanta approved a $2 million Eastside Tax Allocation District grant for the redevelopment of Trinity United Methodist Church.

“The redevelopment of this campus across from Atlanta City Hall will restore and repurpose the historic sanctuary on the east side of the property for multiple uses including multipurpose event space while allowing the church to continue hosting worship services,” according to the announcement.

In addition to the repurposing of the sanctuary on the east side of the property, a “denser residential tower” would replace the classroom/fellowship hall on the west side of it.

The church located at 265 Washington Street SW was designed by architect Walter T. Downing.

Documents indicate that construction is expected to take 18 months, with estimated completion in 2027. The project would include one- and two-bedroom units. A list of amenities indicates that a clubhouse, fitness center, picnic pavilion and business center are planned for the community.
