BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Diocese of Buffalo is taking additional time to finalize its decisions regarding parish mergers and closures, according to an update from Bishop Michael Fisher on Friday.

The diocese, which had initially planned to announce the final list of affected parishes by September 1, is now extending the timeline. The delay comes as the diocese reviews numerous counter-proposals submitted by parish families in response to the initial recommendation to merge or close about one-third of the region’s 160 parishes. This reevaluation involves potential changes in 26 of the 36 parish families initially targeted.

The proposed mergers and closures were first announced in May, driven by financial strains from settling sexual abuse allegations, a shortage of priests, and declining Mass attendance. In June, a full list of approximately 54 parishes was released, sparking concern and feedback from parishioners.

Bishop Fisher acknowledged the uncertainty and thanked parishioners for their patience during this process. He assured them that the final decisions would be announced later next week or early the following week, rather than this Sunday as originally planned.

“As we work diligently to determine the future number of parishes in the Diocese of Buffalo, I ask for your continued prayers and assure you that you remain in mine,” Bishop Fisher said.

The mergers, once finalized, are expected to begin in October.

Instead of closing churches, FIRE Bishop Fisher for disgusting, inept leadership. Sounds like Fischer has no scruples & morals. Jesus Christ, our Savior will take care of him in his ways. I also believe in karma too!

Buffalo needs more churches , not less! It is absolutely disgusting to give up on the community that needs Jesus Christ, our Savior.
