The documentary is based on former Labor Secretary Robert Reich’s book “Aftershock: The Next Economy and America’s Future.” It seeks to examine the widening income gap in the U.S. and Reich’s work to reverse it during his time with the Clinton Administration.

Atkinson Women’s Civic Club Brings Back Atkinson 5K Race Sept. 7
The Atkinson Women’s Civic Club is calling all runners to “Run with heart, give with purpose” as it brings back the Atkinson 5K race. Besides the 5K, there is a children’s fun run just before the event. T-Shirts are free for those registering on or before Aug. 12. The race takes place Saturday, Sept. 7, beginning at 9:15 a.m. and ending at 11, at Woodlock Park. The run kick-offs Atkinson Day, a community-wide celebration.

Haverhill Fire Receives Donation of High-Powered Chop Saw From Merrimac Industrial Sales
The Haverhill Fire Department last week received a new, high-powered electric chop saw for quickly opening difficult-to-access spaces during emergencies. Merrimac Industrial Sales, the Haverhill-based provider of power tools for tradespeople, custom electrical panels and stock electrical components, donated the saw made by Milwaukee Tools. During a presentation at the Water Street fire station, Fire Chief Robert M. O’Brien discussed an essential use of the tool for ventilating a burning structure.

Haverhill Youth, 18, Drowns at Plug Pond Outside of Designated Swim Area
An 18-year-old Haverhill man died early Sunday afternoon after apparently drowning in a deep portion of Haverhill’s Plug Pond. Haverhill Police Chief Robert P. Pistone told WHAV police were dispatched around 1:30 p.m. after receiving an emergency 911 call. The man, whose name has not yet been released, was last seen in the water up to his waist. Haverhill Police, Fire and harbormaster; Pridestar Trinity EMS and State Police and Beverly Dive Teams were all on scene. The body was recovered in water about 25-feet deep just after 3 p.m.

Three local Freemason organizations awarded $66,000 in scholarships last Monday to 27 graduating students pursuing a college degree or technical certificate.
