Steeper Conservation Fines, Campgrounds on Haverhill’s Horizon; Michitson Plans Summit
Haverhill may see steeper fines for non-criminal offenses in recreational areas, as well as new fishing spots and campgrounds on public lands. If city councilors ultimately approve a set of updated ordinances, violating any rule set by the Conservation Commission will bring $100 for the first offense, $200 for the second and max out at $300 for the third. Conservation Officer Daniel McDonald is in charge of these penalties. After 10 years without a dedicated enforcer, the city brought back the position in 2023. For now, councilors are expected to first place them on file for the required two weeks tomorrow night.

Veterans Hold Christmas in July Toy Drive July 25 in Haverhill
Veterans Northeast Outreach Center is celebrating Christmas in July with a toy drive. The drive will collect toys for the children of veterans in need in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Attendees can bring new or gently used toys, participate in free activities such as writing letters to Santa and raffles and receive free boogie board entries and door prizes. Citizens may also donate directly through the center’s Amazon registry at amazon.com.
Essex County Community Foundation Names Lloyd as Next President
Stratton Lloyd becomes the new president and CEO July 1 of Beverly-based Essex County Community Foundation, a $130 million grantmaking organization. Lloyd, of Wenham, succeeds Beth Francis who announced her retirement last fall. Lloyd has served the Foundation for the past six years as executive vice president and chief operating officer. The organization said he was chosen for his experience, leadership skills and deep knowledge of the Foundation’s work and of Essex County.

Woman Dies in 4-Alarm Georgetown House Fire that Began Late Saturday
A woman, initially rescued from a four-alarm Georgetown house fire Saturday night, later died of her injuries. The woman, who was not immediately identified by officials, was still inside when the Georgetown Fire Department was dispatched just before 11 p.m., Saturday night, to a single-family home at 238 E. Main St. Georgetown Fire Chief Matt McKay said in a statement firefighters learned on arrival that three residents were able to escape safely, but a woman was still inside. She was found on the second floor suffering from serious injuries.
Georgetown Police Arrest Haverhill Teen for Alleged Assault, More After Drinking Party
A Haverhill teen was arrested Thursday in Georgetown on a variety of charges, including assault and battery on a police officer, after an alleged drinking party. The 17-year-old boy, not identified because of his age, was arrested in connection with a drinking incident around 5:30 p.m. at American Legion Park, according to Police Chief David Sedgwick. He was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, assault and battery on a police officer, trespassing, being under 21 in possession of liquor and disturbing the peace.
Judge Sends Haverhill Man, Found Guilty of Groveland Murder, to Life in Prison Without Possibility of Parole
Leedell Graham of Haverhill was sentenced Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2019 murder of 82-year-old Patsy “Pat” Schena. A jury in Salem Superior Court found 53-year-old Graham guilty this past Tuesday of first degree murder with extreme atrocity or cruelty and breaking and entering with the intent to commit larceny over $1,200. Schena was killed inside his home on Governor’s Road in Groveland. The sentence was imposed by Judge Kathleen McCarthy-Neyman.

Haverhill Police Child Passenger Safety Seat Check this Saturday
In support of continued passenger safety awareness, the Haverhill Police Department sponsors a Child Passenger Safety Seat Checkpoint this Saturday. According to the department, three out of four car seats are not installed properly and could cause severe harm to child passengers. To prevent this, the department’s checkpoint will have certified passenger seat technicians at the checkpoint to assist with the instillation of new or already-owned car seats and provide further information about child passenger safety.
Updated: Toddler in ‘Critical Condition’ After Falling into Swimming Pool at Haverhill Home
A two-year-old was reported in “critical condition” after, Haverhill Police said, the child fell into a swimming pool early Thursday afternoon on Groveland Street. Haverhill Deputy Police Chief Stephen J. Doherty Jr. told WHAV police officers were dispatched just before 12:30 p.m. to 209 Groveland St., Haverhill. When they arrived, the child was not breathing. State Awards Whittier Tech $350,000 Skills Capital Grant for Culinary Arts Program
The Culinary Arts Program at Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School last week was awarded a $350,000 state Skills Capital Grant. The Culinary Arts Program will use the grant to update equipment that has aged well past its useful life, and purchase new equipment to enhance the learning experiences. The money comes from nearly $15 million in Skills Capital Grants that were awarded statewide to support the upgrade of technology and instructional lab spaces, expansion of career programs for young people and adults and increase in capacity of workforce training programs.
