WHEELING, W.Va. (WTRF) — There’s a new Mayor in the Friendly City and he’s looking forward to what council can do.

It was a dream come true for the Ohio Valley native on Monday as Denny Magruder was sworn in as the 71st Mayor of Wheeling at the Capitol Theatre Ballroom.

After a successful campaign, Mayor Magruder will take over the seat that former Wheeling Mayor Glenn Elliott served in, for two four-year terms.

He says there couldn’t be a better time to take over this role and that he is very excited to get to work with the people of Wheeling.

”This is a great time to be mayor and the other thing I am blessed already with six fellow councilors who are just phenomenal. They have experience, they have knowledge, they have passion and so I’m excited. It’s a great team. We’ve got a great city manager. I’m looking forward to what we can do.”

There will also be two new faces on that talented team that Mayor Magruder mentioned. One of those is Tony Assaro who will take over the duties on council in Ward 1. He says since there is already plenty of positive things happening in the Friendly City the next step is obvious.

”Keep the momentum up. We’ve got some terrific things going on here. We got to keep it rolling. Everyone in council is community oriented and we’re all heading pretty much the same direction, I think. So we’re going to be able to get a lot done. I’m looking forward to it.”

The other new face that will be joining the council is Connie Cain who will be serving in Ward 3 as the first African American Woman on Wheeling City Council. Cain says she is excited to work with her new team and is looking forward to learning about the wants and needs of the people living in Wheeling.

”Like Denny said, we’re going to concentrate on the residents, the neighborhoods, to go along with all the beautification downtown. And once we can get with all the residents and the people and try to get some more people here, I think Wheeling will be the spot.”
