WHEELING, W.Va. (WTRF) — It’s a critical time of the year for the American Red Cross as they work to get blood donors to help save lives.
The American Red Cross and the Wheeling Nailers teamed up on Monday for their annual blood drive at Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack. The blood drive featured an appearance from Wheeling Nailer’s mascot Spike and some cool souvenirs for donors to take with them.
During the summer time the number of donors that the American Red Cross sees decreases by about 25%. With such a large need for blood during this time of year, the Red Cross encourages anyone who can, to please donate.
The Director of Community Relations for the Nailers says being able to shine a spotlight on the people working for the Red Cross is very special.
”To be part of this and to be able to support them and to see them be the real superstars on a day like today, it really gives you an appreciation for just how hard people work in this community.”
DJ Abisalih – Director of Community Relations, Wheeling Nailers
”As far as blood donors in the area, they’re very generous, always coming out to the blood drives. They’re the heroes of the blood drives, as far as I’m concerned.”
Phyllis Riccadonna – Count Manager, Central Appalachian Region, American Red Cross
Those who donated today went home with a Wheeling Nailers hat and an American Red Cross umbrella.
The Red Cross encourages anyone who was hoping to donate today to register for other upcoming drives in the Ohio Valley by visiting their website .
