WHEELING, W.Va. (WTRF) — The flood memorial wall on the corner of Virginia Street and S. Penn Street is undergoing a summer-long upgrade.

Several organizations including Wheeling Heritage and volunteers from the painter’s union have teamed up to repair the structure of the wall and give it a fresh coat of paint.

Five of the most recent floods and their water levels will be added to the memorial to ensure an accurate record of the area’s flood history.

“Overtime, the flood wall has seen some weathering so it’s just time to refresh. It’s nice to put things up and do things like this but we need to keep them fresh for the future, once they start looking poorly it’s a bad reflection on our community which we’re obviously spending a lot of time and money all together lifting it up.”

Scott Schenerlein, executive director of Wheeling Heritage

Schenerlein says once this project is finished, he hopes to refurbish other Wheeling Heritage landmarks that have experienced weathering or damage.
