Hales found GUILTY of 2nd degree murder in 2021 Wheeling Island killing of Michael Jackson

Wheeling, W.Va. (WTRF) – Niyahjah Hales has been found guilty of 2nd Degree Murder for the 2021 killing of Michael Jackson outside the Voodoo Lounge on Wheeling Island.

The jury returned their verdict on Friday evening following a 4 day trial in Ohio County.

The case stems from a shooting outside the Voodoo Lounge on January 28th, 2021. Hales shot 41 year old Michael Jackson outside the building, and Jackson later died in March 2021 from that shooting.

Prosecuting attorney Shawn Turak says this verdict is one that is fair and accurate.

”We have been tirelessly waiting to bring Mr. Hales to justice. He fled. He was in New York, and he didn’t come back to West Virginia in custody until last year. With this verdict, Mr. Hales faces a sentence of between 10 to 40 years. Of course, the state of West Virginia, I will be asking that the court give Mr. Hales the maximum sentence. Mr. Hales is dangerous. He is a flight risk, and he belongs in prison.”

A pre-sentence investigation report has been ordered, at which point the judge will be able to hear from the victim’s family and how this has impacted them.
