Local teacher Betsy Knorr selected as 2024 High School teacher of the Year

Wheeling, W.Va. (WTRF) – Each year, the Wheeling Area Chamber Partners in Education Committee is faced with deciding who will be the Elementary, Middle, and High School Teachers of the Year.

One Wheeling Central, West Liberty University, and Wheeling Jesuit University graduate has been educating local students for over a decade where she was once sitting in the desks she now teaches in front of.

It’s Betsy Knorr who has been selected as the 2024 High School Teacher of the Year.

From the time Betsy Knorr was a little girl, she knew it was her calling to teach.

Playing school in her garage year-round with her younger sister, shopping at the teacher supply store, and loving the classroom was something that never escaped her.

“When I got to high school, I realized that I wanted to be in English class forever, and I had wonderful English teachers in high school, and they really just motivated me and encouraged me to chase that dream. Now, I am living the dream.”

Wheeling Central Catholic High School is where Betsy found her passion for English and was inspired by her teachers at the time.

Now, she is going into her 12th year on the other side of the classroom, inspiring the next generation of 9th and 11th grade Wheeling Central Catholic students by teaching her own English classes.

“Being able to come back to Central and give back to the place that gave me so much and really instilled this passion in me has been wonderful.”

This drive is what has propelled her forward to being recognized as one of the recipients of the 2024 Teacher of the Year award presented by the Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce’s Partners in Education program.

“I really give my all to teaching every day when I come into the building. And so just, you know, a little recognition that always goes a long way, but we don’t do it for the recognition, obviously.”

Mrs. Knorr will be recognized at the annual Chamber Steak Fry for her hard work and dedication in giving back to the young adults that will continue their journeys right in our own community.

The annual Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce Steak Fry and Partners in Education Awards will be held on Thursday, August 8th at the Wheeling Ohio County Airport.
