WHEELING, W.Va. ( WTRF ) – NAMI Greater Wheeling, YWCA and Creative Solutions for Humanity are hosting a free movie screening on Wednesday, July 31 at West Virginia Northern Community College’s Auditorium located in the B&O Building.

July is Minority Mental Health Awareness month, and these three organizations wanted to create a space in our community to discuss and provide resources.

The movie is called “HUSH | Help Us Stay” and strives to empower Black families and the community through education.

The film focuses on how families can take their generational and individual trauma by seeking help for their mental health.

“It’s so important for us as a community to understand that so that way we can be there to support an individual in their journey in mental health and their ability to reach out and ask for help. It’s also really important from a mental health provider perspective, for those of us who are mental health providers to really understand and connect with an individual in the black community, understanding how their race really plays into their mental health so that way we can better support them in terms of their treatment and recovery.”

Julie Gomez | Executive Director, NAMI Greater Wheeling

“We’re to a point now in society where it’s difficult to find one person that mental health hasn’t touched their life in some way, shape or form. So, I think it’s important to know that there’s layers involved with the treatment and understanding of mental illness.”

Ron Scott | Cultural Diversity & Community Outreach Director, Wheeling YWCA

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the movie starts at 6 p.m.

Light refreshments will be provided at the screening followed by a brief discussion.
