The first week of recreational marijuana sales in Ohio was successful for dispensaries.

As reported on News Center 7 at 5:30, over $10 million in sales was generated in just the first few days, according to the Ohio Division of Cannabis Control.

The tax money made from the sales will be divided into four parts. One of the biggest portions goes to local government, where they can use that funding for anything they’re approved for.

From August 6 when sales began to August 10th, more than $11.5 million was generated from sales. It comes from more than 100,000 separate transactions.

Ohio placed a 10 percent tax on recreational marijuana sales, although we don’t have an official number, this shows more than $1 million in tax revenue during that time.

Ohio’s Division of Cannabis Control told News Center 7 that the tax money is being split four ways.

36 percent will go towards the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services to assist with substance abuse. Three percent of the tax stays with Ohio’s Division of Cannabis Control.

The last 36 percent will go to local governments that have recreational dispensaries, where all residents can see that tax revenue benefit them the most.

News Center 7 reached out to the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services to see how they would be using this new money. They responded with a statement saying, “It remains to be seen how much tax revenue will be generated, so it’s a bit premature for us to comment at this time. once we have a clearer picture of the revenue stream, the department will be in a better position to comment.”
