32-year-old Michigan man arrested after chase, crash on I-75 near county line

A 32-year-old man from Michigan was arrested after leading authorities on a chase near the Montgomery County and Miami County line on Tuesday, according to a spokesperson from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Just before 2:30 p.m., OSHP Piqua Post troopers were dispatched on reports of a reckless 2016 Ford Transit van traveling south on I-75.

Troopers learned the individual, later identified as Zachariah J. Burns, of New Baltimore, MI, was wanted for felony charges out of Michigan, according to the spokesperson.

Around 3 p.m., a state trooper saw the van and tried to stop it.

Burns didn’t pull over and a pursuit began, continuing southbound on I-75 “at a high rate of speed into Montgomery County,” the spokesperson said.

The van exited on Northwoods Boulevard then got onto I-75 N and continued driving at a high rate of speed.

An OSHP Dayton Post trooper successfully deployed spike strips near the I-75 and I-70 interchange, striking the van’s right-side tires.

Burns continued on I-75 N, approaching National Road when the van experienced equipment failure from the spike strips.

The van crashed into a guardrail near mile marker 65 and Burns got out and ran away from the scene, the spokesperson said.

Troopers and Vandalia Police Department officers chased Burns, who continued to ignore verbal commands. An officer found Burns a short time later.

The spokesperson said Burns didn’t listen to commands and resisted arrest, so authorities used a taser to gain control and take him into custody.

Burns was transported to Upper Valley Medical Center for precautionary measures.

He was cleared and transported to Miami County Jail on multiple charges. Those charges include:

• Failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer
• Operating a vehicle impaired
• Resisting arrest
• Causing harm to a police officer
• Open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle
