Dare I say this might be better than the original cut? Zach Top has been laying down some stone-cold killer covers over the past few months. From teaming up with Billy Strings at Under The Big Sky Festival, going back to his roots with "Freeborn Man," to covering the classics
like Gary Stewart's "She's Actin' Single (I'm Drinkin' Double)," or Johnny Paycheck's “Take This Job & Shove It.” Now, Top is diving into the thick of Y2K country music, hitting an all-time classic from 2006, Billy Currington's "Good Directions." While Top has covered this in the past, including on his Exit/In debut in Nashville, a recent social media user shared a video from a performance earlier this summer where he blows the cover out of the water. The song's iconic intro was a tell-off that this cover was getting fired up, and fans did not miss a beat, jumping in to sing the lyrics when the time came. Top is known for having the voice of a '90s legend reincarnated, many often comparing him to Alan Jackson Keith Whitley. Recently, I've even seen folks say Vince Gill (not something I hear personally, but hey, I'm paid to report on what the people think and want to see). Make no mistake, the man can PICK, but his vocals on "Good Directions" show fans that he can sing any era of country music. Top puts on the charm, working the crowd as he delivers smooth twangs in his vocals. The backing from his band is near perfection, and his pedal steel player brings the HEAT with the riffs country music fans know and love from the song's melody.
"I told her, "Way up yonder past the caution light There's a little country store with an old Coke sign You got to stop in and ask Miss Bell for some of her sweet tea Then a left will take you to the interstate But a right will bring you right back here to me" Zach Top does not miss any of his covers, but this one might be one of my new favorites. Maybe a cover album is in his future...he's got enough killer ones in his catalog to fill out a tracklist. Fire this one up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12rdOYsbK5g
