Sierra Ferrell is an old soul in a young body.

Once again, I am here to tell you about a stellar cover that Sierra Ferrell has laid down, proving again that she can cover any genre and any era of music. We have seen her do The Beatles, Johnny and June Carter Cash’s “Jackson,” and the classics like “Neon Moon.” She can honestly do it all.

In February, Ferrell teamed up with Mirror Mirror Network to step back in time and deliver some fantastic covers from the ’60s. Given it was the month of love, Sam Cooks’s “Cupid” was a perfect choice, and today, they released another amazing cover from that session.

Ferrell put on her rock and roll hat, laying down a stellar cover of Wanda Jackson’s “Funnel Of Love.”

Wanda Jackson was an essential part of the ’60s movement music. She sang everything from gospel to country but was most well known as the Queen of Rockabilly, being one of the first women to combine elements of country music with classic country. The single from 1961 was written by Charles McCoy and Ken Westbury and was released as the B-side to her first major pop-country hit, “Right or Wrong.”

While “Right or Wrong is probably the most recognizable song by country fans that Jackson sings, many consider “Funnel Of Love” to be her best vocal performance. The track is the opposite of the airy and smooth twangs in “Right or Wrong.” Her gritty and raspy vocals are paired with a surf rock melody, showing off her dynamic sound as an artist.

Ferrell once told Whiskey Riff that her dream project was to make a surf rock record, and after hearing her take on this track, I would LOVE to hear more of Ferrell singing this style of music.

Sierra Ferrell accompanies herself on a saw in the track, giving it a whimsical feel that aligns with the sounds we know from Ferrell’s catalog, like “The Sea.” She gives her best Jackson impersonation, amplifying the rasp on the first lines of each verse but then dialing it back and adding some of her signature style to the remaining lyrics and chorus.

As Ferrell delivers the lyrics, she seems to be barely trying, not having to reach for the wide vocal range found on the track. Mirror Mirror Network said it best on their social media post promoting the cover:

“There’s something special about this lil lady right here.. but you didn’t need us to tell you that, now did you?”

How lucky we are to live in the Sierra era… she’s a one-of-a-kind talent.
