NASCAR returned from a two-week hiatus this past weekend, with the Cup Series hitting the track at Richmond Raceway for the Cook Out 400. And naturally with short track racing, it wasn’t short of excitement on the final two laps.

Austin Dillon, who came into the race sitting at 32nd in the points and desperately needing a win to make the playoffs, was headed towards a major upset when Ryan Preece and Ricky Stenhouse brought out the caution and set up an overtime finish. Dillon kept the lead while Joey Logano came out 2nd and Denny Hamlin in 3rd when the field exited pit road.

On the final restart, Logano managed to get by the #3 car and looked to be on his way to keeping Richard Childress Racing out of victory lane. Heading into the final lap, he pulled away even more and put at least a car length or two between him and Austin Dillon. But as they went into turn 3 on the final lap, Dillon decided to dive bomb Logano and put the bumper to him, sending the #22 spinning and opening the door for a drag race between Hamlin and Dillon for the victory.

But then, Dillon made contact with Hamlin as well, he spun out and hit the wall, and Austin Dillon cruised towards his first win since August 2022.

Following the race, the driver of the #22 Team Penske car had some harsh words for Dillon:

“It’s chickenshit, there’s no doubt about it. He’s four car lengths back, not even close, then he wrecks the 11 to go along with it. And then he’s going to go up there and thank God and praise everything with his baby. It’s a bunch of BS.

It’s not even freakin’ close. Dude, I get it, bump and run, I get it. I didn’t back up the corner at all. He came in there and just drove through me. It’s ridiculous that that’s the way we race.

I get bump and runs. I do that. I would expect it. But from 4 car lengths back he was never going to make the corner. And then he wrecks the other car, he wrecks the 11 to go with it. What a piece of crap.”

Hamlin also wasn’t happy, but he called out NASCAR for refusing to officiate its own races properly.

    Logano continued:

“He’s a piece of crap. He sucks. He’s sucked his whole career, and now he’s going to be in the playoffs.”

And look, a number of drivers too exception to what Austin Dillon did to win that race. Bubba Wallace, Ross Chastain and Tyler Reddick all called out Dillon’s move and the bigger picture… what it means for the sport going forward. If we’re going to continue to set bad precedent by NASCAR allowing drivers to just right rear somebody into the wall for a win – not to mention the safety concerns if that happens at a bigger track.

It remains to be seen if Dillon will be punished, but I can’t imagine they strip him of the win, so what punishment would really be felt?

Nevertheless, Joey Logano should perhaps be looking at some punishment of his own.

Following the race, while Austin Dillon and his crew were down on the track, Joey Logano drive the #22 car right up to Austin Dillon’s pit box, approached his family with more speed than anyone else on on pit road was moving with. Dillon’s wife and little baby jumped out of the way, and then he revved up his engine and spun the tires right at them… an obvious show of aggression.

Now granted, I’m not sure why people are all over pit road while cars are still trying to exit the track (that’s a NASCAR issue as well) but you’re gonna try and intimidate the man’s family? His wife and baby? C’mon Joey… you wanna talk about chicken sh*t? That’s a chicken sh*t move.

Nobody was moving as fast as Joey was on pit road right there, and I get that he’s mad and probably annoyed with the people walking around pit road, but you just can’t do that.

Here’s another angle from behind them:

It remains to be seen if Logano will receive any kind of punishment for that classless move.

Dillon called him out while talking with Kevin Harvick:

“The only thing that did piss me off about Joey was when he came through there, my wife and kid were headed across to get to cross, and he revved the engine up right in front of my kid and Johnny Morris and those people.

I get it. You got to be mad and upset, but do it like an interview or talk to me about it. You got to be careful on pit road with that type of stuff.”

When asked by Fox, Dillon responded to both comments from Logano and Denny Hamlin, taking much more exception to Joey’s choice words:

“He threw some low blows in there. Obviously, frustrated in the moment, but the two guys that I got into it with have done that a lot that I’ve learned from on the last lap of the races themselves. I’ve heard Joey’s interviews… ‘How bad do you want it? You got to do whatever it takes.’ I’ve seen him do it at Martinsville and different places on the last corner. So this time, he was a victim of it. Sometimes, it happens.

He’s got a lot more wins than I do. If he retaliates, he retaliates. My grandfather said, ‘You might kick a dog, but he’ll bite back.'”
