Tyler Childers is quite the jokester these days. But although he is messing around with his fans regarding how he runs his sets, I do think there is some truth behind his recent monologues.

A few weeks back, Childers shared a hilarious monologue with his audience about the types of people you meet at his concert. While the focal point of this skit was to show how a beautiful friendship could start at one of his shows with those seated or standing around you, he also poked at the other side of the spectrum. The folks that attend shows and leave p*ssed off that he didn’t play his early hits. While Childers still sprinkles in a few of the songs from early on in his career, there is no denying that the focal point of his shows today is his new material.

This monologue moment brought back up the memory of Childers being visibly annoyed by fans yelling at him to play “Feathered Indians.” While this is a staple out of his catalog, after going through some personal life changes, Childers no longer plays that song. (But that does not mean it’s not a certified heater.) Childers, being the professional that he is, commented to the crowd that he was polite and respectful but also reminded fans that this was his concert and he was going to do it his way.

Earlier this week, Tyler Childers took to the stage in Bend, Oregon, putting on the consistent and stellar show he is known for. Childers played to a packed crowd and a packed river outside the venue. Yes, you read that right. Residents who could not snag tickets to the show got creative and used their paddle boards to get next to the riverside venue. The result looks like a magical way to experience live music.

While I could sit here and talk all day about that magical scene, we are here to talk about Childers cracking a joke to his fans, reminding them that he will always do things his way. During a portion of his show, Childers sits with his guitar and does an acoustic-only portion. That night, Childers decided he wanted to extend that because he was having a good time playing his stripped-back music.

“Man, today has been a beautiful day. I woke up feeling really good; I just want you to know that. I woke up, and I said, ‘Today, I’m going to do a long acoustic set.'”

After that statement, the crowd erupted with applause. But Childers was not done yet. As he knows, in each crowd, a handful of people are there for the one or two hit songs and then write angry reviews after the fact; he had a special note for them.

“And I hope that it goes over well. And if it doesn’t, well, then you did what you wanted to do, Tyler, and it’s gotten you this far. So…”

Is he wrong, though? Not in the slightest.

Childers has always done things his way. Whether it’s pushing the sound of Appalachia into the mainstream country scene, putting out a traditional fiddle album or a Gospel album, addressing police brutality, or highlighting a homosexual relationship in a music video that garnered mixed reactions, he has always backed his decisions and stood confidently in the choices made thus far in his career.

And whether people like that or not… the proof is in the pudding. If you have folks willing to paddle board to hear a snippet of your music live, you’re doing something right.

    Tyler Childers IS that guy.
