Another fantastic tribute to the Alabama band. Last night, CMT honored the legendary band Alabama through a CMT Giants tribute show. With over 40 number-one hits and over 75 million records sold, Alabama is the most successful band in country music. While not all of the original members are on this earth today, the impact of each man who graced the stage with Alabama left a lasting legacy on country music and the up-and-comers of today. To say it's about time that Alabama got a
CMT Giants special is an understatement. Throughout the night, many of the biggest names in country music covered some of the band's biggest hits while the members of Alabama sat in the audience and reveled in the music they had created over the decades. Prior to the special, CMT released Riley Green's cover of "Dixieland Delight," which highlighted one of the upbeat and "party" songs, if you will, from their discography. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Jamey Johnson beautifully covered the sad song "Angels Among Us." Alabama released the song in 1993 as a Christmas song, appearing on their album Cheap Seats. Don Goodman and Becky Hobbs wrote the single, which became a song from the band's catalog that resonated highly with fans. Many listeners considered the stripped-back melody and moving lyrics to be a blessing from the musicians. Most famously, "Angels Among Us" performed at Dale Earnheart's funeral, as he was a friend of lead singer Randy Owen. Jamey Johnson did justice to this song by standing center stage and performing with only his stunning vocals and acoustic guitar. The original cut of the single has a very stripped-back melody, and Johnson kept that element very simple during his performance, letting his booming vocals convey the story of the lyrics. Johnson's vocals are soothing yet strong as he delivers each line; you can tell that everyone in the audience is dialed in on him. The way he sings "Angels Among Us" is beyond captivating.
"Oh, I believe there are angels among us Sent down to us from somewhere up above They come to you and me in our darkest hours To show us how to live, to teach us how to give To guide us with the light of love" During the performance, they flash to the members of Alabama, who seem in awe of how Johnson is performing their song, almost as though they are hearing the powerful lyrics again for the first time. During the last chorus, Johnson asks the crowd to help sing it with him, and the addition of the audience softly singing with Johnson is simply beautiful. "Angels Among Us" might be one of the most beautiful songs in country music, and Jamey Johnson's take on the song chokes you up. This one is a must-listen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNdTG4yHJTg
