She does it again. Today, Morgan Wade
released her third studio album Obsessed , which was produced by her touring guitarist Clint Wells and is a very stripped-back, earnest collection of songs that show off the best of who Morgan is as an artist and writer. She released a good chunk of the music before album release day, including “2AM in London,” “Halloween,” “Time to Love, Time to Kill,” “Moth to a Flame” and "Total Control," which left nine brand new tunes to get into today. Overall, the record has a very raw, almost under-produced feel to it, which of course I love and is made all the more authentic and true to who she is considering Morgan wrote every single song by herself. Not many artists can do that, especially when it comes to an entire record that is as quality and impressive as this one is (especially in the more mainstream part of the genre). And honestly, one of the easy standouts is her duet "Walked on Water" with Kesha, who is a pop artist known for hits like "TiK ToK," and "Blow," so let's just say this type of heartfelt ballad is not what I was expecting at all from the two of them, but am blown away by and absolutely love. It's always fun when an artist surprises you, and in this case, I think Morgan/Kesha partnership is incredibly unique and actually really works, so I'm here for it. Morgan also included a really different song called "Juliet," which is a take on the classic Romeo and Juliet story where Juliet is thinking about another woman, rather than wanting to be with a man. I've certainly never heard another country song like it, which makes it an easy standout the album for that factor alone. Throughout
Obsessed , there are themes of love and longing, distant memories and wistful thoughts of what could've been, and I think that's what Morgan does so well and is unlike any other artist I can think of, in country especially. Morgan just released Psychopath last year, which was a great record, but her growth even in the last year as an artist is so apparent in the best way. At the same time, a lot of the writing is classic Morgan in terms of the honesty and authenticity that we all fell in love with on her previous two albums. She is such a bright spot and talented artist within the genre, and I'm obsessed with this album because of her knack for storytelling, authentic delivery and willingness to lay it all on the line for our listening pleasure. I'll leave a few of my favorites below, but of course, you should check out the album in its entirety because it's one of the best of the year thus far.
