Polymaths or people of many talents come along every now and again to humble the rest of us. Any instinct we have to blast ourselves onto the unforgiving hellscape of the modern Internet with our "special/additional skills" crawl back into our holes in shame. The phrase "too blessed to be stressed" is quite literally what comes to mind for these individuals. Like what could possibly plague the beautiful mind of Sione Vaki? Knowing nothing of his upbringing or life story, Vaki can't be too down in the dumps on any given day. Think about it this way: He was a first-team All-Pac-12 selection as a safety and special teamer last season at Utah. Like he's good enough at those things to be the best of the best in what was one of America's elite college football conferences.
And , he recorded five touchdowns on only 53 touches from scrimmage (42 carries, two TDs; 11 receptions, three TDs). That limited offensive sample size so compelled the reigning NFC finalist Detroit Lions to draft Vaki in the fourth round of this year's draft. So, like, Vaki is a good-looking dude. Elite athlete. As well-rounded and successful on the field as athletes come. In the NFL. And oh by the way, it turns out he has the singing voice of an angel! https://twitter.com/nfl/status/1826374954541351267 Like a combination of Fergie and Jesus. Like an angel pouring honey in your ear. For as hard-nosed and physical as Vaki is on the field, he has such a gentle, higher-register singing delivery that you'd never in a million years pin on him. All I know from watching many editions of HBO's
Hard Knocks is that rookies are often "hazed" in front of the team, forced to address their mates with their name, where they went to college, their signing bonuses, and then often some horribly tone-deaf rendition of a song. If Vaki is willing to let it rip in front of assembled media members, we had better get some behind-the-scenes footage of when he brought his gift out in a team meeting for the first time. He probably took the roof off the place. One of my favorite tweets about the NFL Draft this year was about Vaki, and how Detroit general manager Brad Holmes can seemingly do no wrong these days in building what I consider to be the league's very best roster . https://twitter.com/BenjaminSolak/status/1784278468613554617 Despite a serious lack of experience at running back, at least in the preseason Vaki seems to be adjusting to his new role well. https://twitter.com/lions/status/1825292086645768356 While we shouldn't anticipate Vaki seeing many snaps on offense this year with the likes of 2023 first-rounder Jahmyr Gibbs and productive veteran David Montgomery in the backfield, he's off to an encouraging start. If nothing else, Vaki can keep spirits high in the locker room with his beautiful voice and double as a special teams ace on Sundays for the time being. Again, pretty decent life to have all this going for you and enter the professional ranks on a legit Super Bowl contender. PS: I was kidding about the whole intro of this article. Follow your dreams, ladies and gents. Let inner freak flag fly. Or raise to quarter mast. Post that totally-not-regrettable choreographed TikTok dance if that's still a thing. Don't wait till you're 40 to launch Prestige Worldwide, or save that stage-worthy voice till then for what? The Catalina Wine Mixer? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLnMBph5VWk
