Simply stunning. Yesterday, Chris Stapleton performed a gorgeous rendition of one of Kris Kristofferson’s signature songs "Why Me," which was originally released in 1973 on Kris’ Jesus Was A Capricorn album. It ultimately became his biggest hit as a solo artist, peaking at #1 on the Billboard U.S. Hot Country Singles chart that same year. The story of Kris' salvation and how the song came to be is well-worth a read if you haven't heard that story before, which you can check out
HERE . Stapleton was part of a group of several country artists who performed at a ceremony at the Country Music Hall of Fame’s Ford Theater yesterday, celebrating Marty Stuart's extremely generous gift of over 22,000 country music artifacts from his personal collection that he has acquired over the years. From guitars to stage costumes, it's an incredible donation and will be amazing to see all of the one-of-a-kind items on display, like the 1939 Martin D-45 Chris played that was owned and played by both Johnny Cash and Hank Williams. Of course, it goes without saying that he could sing the phonebook and win a Grammy for doing so, but there's just something about hearing him sing a gospel-style song like this that I can't get enough of. His soulful vocals and sincere delivery it unmatched, and honestly, I would love to get a full-fledged gospel album from him one day. "Why Me" has been covered countless times of the years, and by some of the biggest artists in the world, from Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson to Marty's mentor and friend, Johnny Cash. All of that makes it an extremely special moment to see Chris, also a friend of Marty's who has taken him on tour in recent years, playing Cash's guitar singing such a special and meaningful song. Backed by an incredible group of musicians, this is easily the best thing you'll watch all week and well-worth a few minutes of your time: https://youtu.be/DqxNY0xw2S4?t=1491 Here's a special Johnny Cash live performance of it at a a Billy Graham Crusade decades ago, with a Mr. Marty Stuart playing bass (Marty was a member of Johnny's road band before starting to as a solo artist in the early 1980's): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYBlyMX1e8M
