Everything Charles Wesley Godwin touches turns to gold, and his latest release is no exception. A cover of Canadian artist Gordon Lightfoot's hit "Sundown," Godwin initially released his rendition of the tune in an Amazon music exclusive, but now it is available for all to hear wherever you stream music. Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omm611FTWDE For anyone who may not be familiar, Gordon Lightfoot was an incredible songwriter and Canadian folk artist who was most prominent throughout the 1960s and '70s. The biggest hit of his career, "Sundown," which has amassed over 150 million steams on Spotify, was originally released in 1974 as the title track to his ninth studio record
Sundown . The song is believed to be inspired by his relationship with the well-known background singer and groupie Cathy Smith (the same woman who served jail time for providing John Belushi with the speedball that resulted in his fatal overdose in 1982). The song tells the story of Lightfoot, who is at home, wondering if his lover is being faithful to him while she is out on the town. The irony is that Gordon’s relationship with Cathy began as an affair, as he was married at the time they met. Give the original version of "Sundown" a listen as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdBU-jpJJtA Lightfoot passed away in May of 2023 at the age of 84, but he left behind a spectacular catalog of music that will live on in the hearts of music fans for decades to come. And I'm sure he'd be glad to know that prominent artists like Charles Wesley Godwin are carrying on his tradition. One of the hottest artists in country music over the past couple of years, Godwin has rapidly grown his fan base on the heels of three stellar studio albums amidst a handful of singles, and EP, and his
Live From Echo Mountain project earlier this year. No stranger to a good cover, Godwin has made his home state anthem "Take Me home, Country Roads," a staple in his live set, and is frequently posting covers to social media of songs by The Avett Brothers, Bruce Springsteen, and many others. Perhaps the best cover the Morgantown, West Virginia native has recorded, though, is Chris Knight's "The Jealous Kind" from Godwin's 2023 Live From the Church EP. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjQFPlDKdzM Charles Wesley Godwin will be out on the road with his band The Allegheny High all fall, mixing these amazing covers in with his even better originals in cities all across the country. If he's coming near your town, the high energy Charles Wesley Godwin show is not one you want to miss. https://www.instagram.com/p/C-LxNV4hwUR/
