John Mayer ... if either of you are reading this, we're all still waiting for a studio version of this song. The year was 2019. Mayer was on his "Summer World Tour," and one of the stops he made along the way was Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. I was actually there that night, albeit up in the nosebleeds. They say the sound quality for concerts is best up top... that's why I sit up there usually. And anytime an artist comes to Nashville, Tennessee, there's always a decent chance that a country star in town will drop in to help out. Those in attendance really got their money's worth, because Mayer brought out one of the best in the business. Before he did though, he gave anonymous-yet-worthy introduction:
"I’d like to invite a friend to the stage… now I want to tell you a quick story. I texted this friend and I said, ‘Well, do you wanna do one of your songs or do one of my songs?’ and he said, ‘We could do either or we could just write a song and then go play it when you get into town.’ I said, ‘Challenge accepted.'” Out walked Chris Stapleton, and if I remember correctly, it was one of the loudest crowd pops of the night. Right up there beside the crowd cheering for the encore later on. Mayer and Stapleton proceeded to play a song called "I Just Remembered That I Didn't Care," which they had presumably written together the night before the concert. And it was incredible. If they really did throw it together last minute, you couldn't tell. The song accentuated the best elements of both artists, and Stapleton's iconic voice paired up incredibly well with Mayer's stellar (and vastly underrated) guitar playing. The only downside to the performance? That night in Nashville is the only time it's ever been played, and a studio version of the song has never been released. Chris Stapleton to sing one of their songs . Why? Because often times, Stapleton will vocally belt it out like it's never been belted out before.
