“They Are Like Prodigies” – Lainey Wilson On Why She Used Her Touring Band To Record New Album, ‘Whirlwind’

Lainey Wilson keeps the people who have supported her through thick and thin in her circle. With spending over a decade in Nashville before her big break, Wilson has shared the stage with many of the same members of her band today, years before she had a hit single. Because of this, Wilson ensures that these guys are taken care of and their talents are constantly showcased. On Wilson's most recent record, Whirlwind, she noted that she was entering a new era as a songwriter writing love songs for the first time but still doing them her way. While she might be entering a new era as an artist, she is ensuring her band is an era that will not change. If they weren't on the road with me, they could all be studio musicians. They are like prodigies. It’s the weirdest thing. We have played hundreds of shows together. These are the guys (who) used to travel around with me in my flatbed truck, and we’d strap our equipment down to the back. They're the ones that ate dirt with me. They’re the ones who were there in the beginning, believed in me then (and) sacrificed a lot to be out there now. I just believe in them the way they believe in me. — For the most part, the bones of everything was my boys.” She did note that for a few songs, they brought in a few players for parts that needed double drums or multiple musicians on the same instrument simultaneously. Still, it's a testament to how Wilson cares for the people in her corner, and she wants to ensure they share the limelight with her.
